Build a resume without handing over your data

Most free resume builders ask you to create an account before you can download anything, then email you for months afterwards. Some put a watermark on the free export and charge to remove it. Along the way they collect your full employment history, your phone number and your address — one of the most complete personal profiles you can hand a company.

This builder does none of that. It runs entirely in your browser, saves your draft to your own device, and exports a clean PDF with no watermark and no account.

What an ATS actually does

Most medium and large employers run applications through an applicant tracking system before a human sees them. The ATS extracts text from your PDF and maps it into fields: name, contact details, job titles, dates, skills. If it cannot parse your layout, your experience arrives garbled or blank — and a strong candidate gets filtered out by a formatting decision.

Layouts that cause trouble:

• Text inside images or graphics — invisible to a parser.
• Tables and multi-column layouts — reading order gets scrambled.
• Headers and footers — many parsers skip them entirely, so contact details there can vanish.
• Invented section names — “Where I've Been” instead of “Work Experience” stops the parser from recognising the section.
• Unusual fonts or icons — glyphs that extract as question marks.

The Classic template here avoids all of these. It is deliberately plain, because plain is what gets read.

Writing bullet points that land

The most common weakness in a resume is describing duties instead of results. “Responsible for social media” tells a recruiter nothing — every person in that role was responsible for social media. What distinguishes you is what changed because you were there.

A reliable pattern is verb + what you did + measurable outcome:

• Weak: “Responsible for the company blog.”
• Strong: “Grew blog traffic from 4,000 to 31,000 monthly visits in 14 months by rebuilding the content plan around search intent.”
• Weak: “Helped with customer support.”
• Strong: “Cut average first-response time from 9 hours to 40 minutes by introducing a triage rota and canned replies.”

If you genuinely have no numbers, use scale or scope instead: team size, budget, number of clients, volume handled. Never invent a figure — it is the easiest thing in the world to unravel in an interview.

Tailoring without rewriting everything

Read the job posting and note the nouns it repeats — tools, methods, responsibilities. Those are very often the exact terms the ATS is scoring against. If you have genuine experience with them, make sure they appear in your wording rather than a synonym you happen to prefer. Changing your summary and reordering your bullet points is usually enough; you rarely need a new resume per application.

Before you send it

• Export as PDF, never a word processor file — formatting stays fixed for the reader.
• Name the file properly: `Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf`, not `resume-final-v3.pdf`.
• Check it copies cleanly. Open the PDF, select all, paste into a plain text editor. What you see is roughly what the parser sees.
• Read it aloud once. Awkward phrasing and typos surface immediately when spoken.
