How to convert HEIC to JPG

Why iPhones use HEIC
HEIC — High Efficiency Image Container — uses the same compression technology as modern video, which lets it store a photo at JPG quality in roughly half the space. On a phone with thousands of photos that adds up to many gigabytes. It also supports features JPG can't, such as 16-bit colour and multiple images in one file, which iPhones use for Live Photos and depth information.
Where HEIC causes trouble
- Windows — needs the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store to preview HEIC, and some PCs also need a HEVC codec.
- Websites and forms — many upload fields only accept JPG and PNG, and reject HEIC outright.
- Older software — many image editors and office programs can't open HEIC files.
- Printing services — often require JPG.
JPG or PNG?
Choose JPG for photos you want to share, email or upload: files are small and open everywhere. Choose PNG only if you need lossless output for editing, bearing in mind the files will be several times larger. Either way the conversion happens on your device, so there's no upload to wait for and no copy left on anyone's server.

What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default since iOS 11. It stores an image at roughly the same quality as JPG in about half the space. The catch is compatibility: many Windows programs, websites and older devices can't open it.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The converter decodes HEIC in your browser using WebAssembly, so your photos never leave your device. The decoder itself is downloaded once when you add your first photo; after that, conversion works even offline.
Does converting remove the location and camera details?
Yes. The converted file contains only the image, with none of the EXIF metadata from the original — no GPS position, camera model or timestamps. That's usually a benefit when sharing, but keep your originals if you want to preserve that information.
How do I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG, at the cost of larger files. Alternatively, Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic converts photos to JPG when you copy them to a computer by cable.
